2. Suggested routes outside Almuñecar where a car is needed. Below we write in 2 sections about the suggested routes around Almuñecar – we divide them in shorter (max 1 day trips) and longer trips. But we want to stress that our goal is not to write a new tourist guide about Almuñecar – we just want our guest to have a general overview of the possibilities that exists. If you decide to go further and explore some of the routes then we ask you to send us an email to [email protected], and we will assist you. We plan to make data sheets for each of the routes gradually in cooperation with our guests. Alternatively you can search the internet for further information about the routes that interests specifically you and your family.
2.1. 1 day Trips in the Area Around Almuñecar. All trips demands that you wake up early and come back late in order to get the most out of your time and enjoy the different sights. Again we repeat that we just provide a general description, so please look for more information on the internet or write us an email : [email protected]
GRANADA og ALHAMBRA. The Castle Alhambra and Granada are among the most popular Spanish tourist sights. Alhambra is best described with that this is a place that any human being should visit minimum 1 time. The city of Granada is a very charming city, and you will not regret the visit. Even you should consider to make the trip to Granada a 2 or 3 day trip.
Warning. In many places of Granada city centre it is forbidden to drive, and they have put up cameras. And you will be fined. Therefore park in the outskirts of Granada and then either walk (possible no doubt) or take a taxi to the centre.
MALAGA. Malaga is also a must. A real joyful city with an Andalusian soul. Many cruise ships starts or pass by Malaga. Malaga has like Granada a lot of traffic so park in the outskirts of the city and pay the necessary parking cost. Malaga has many attractions take one of the city tours or prepare yourself by internet sources. Picasso Museum a must for many.
JUNTA DE LOS RIOS. Who will believe that we have such a beautiful area so close to the beach area/Almuñecar. In between the mountains you will suddenly find waterfalls, cliffs and small rivers. Fantastic for a picnic. The area is a great experience for children and youngsters and of course for adventourous adults – to bring a baby will be difficult. The water in the rivers come from the mountains and is cold, so best to choose a warm day for this experience. We want to note that the drive down to Junta de los Rios is mountain road, and it is a dirt road, so either you must be an experienced driver or maybe better to choose one of the guided tours for JUNTA DE LOS RIOS. If you drive by yourself from Almuñecar, you drive and pass through both Jete and Otivar, and then you continue uphill until you see the entrance for the “Junta de los Rios” in between km 43-42. Junta de los Rios = where the rivers meet.
CUEVAS DE NERJA (Maro). The caves of Nerja placed outside Nerja in Maro is worth a visit. You should be able to do it as a half day trip or you can combine the trip with seeing Nerja or Frigiliana described below. I have seen various caves in my life….but Cuevas de Nerja ALWAYS impresses me.
NERJA. It is a tourist “mekka” and many English and Dutch has chosen to live here. So you will here as much English and Dutch as Spanish here. But this also implies that Nerja has more international shops than Almuñecar. Nerja has probably better beaches than Almuñecar but not the same soul. But why do you not just go – and then you will get your own impression.
FRIGILIANA. Also called the “white” village Frigiliana. Andalusia and South Spain are known for the many beautiful white villages – placed in the mountains behind the coast line. Frigiliana is one of the most beautiful ones, and it is very cosy. A long description is not necessary – just walk around in the narrow streets and discover the soul of Frigiliana. You can combine the Frigiliana trip with Cuevas de Nerja and Nerja. Then we suggest to start our early in Frigiliana – walk around eat an early lunch, and the go to see the caves “Cuevas de Nerja” (remember to check opening hours).
El ARCHEBUCHAL. This is a small village north of Frigiliana that they are renovating. Beautiful nature.
MOTRIL. Rom fabrikken Ron Mateo giver gratis rundvisning og smagsprøver.
MARINA DEL ESTE. This small port is the nearest port by Almuñecar. Have a stroll around and look on all the yachts and boats, and have a lunch or dinner right by the port. There is also a beach close by Marina del Este. You will see it before entering the port area. To see Marina del Este is a half day trip.
SIERRA NEVADA. We say that it is the best skiing area in Spain but it is not really wellknown by North Europeans. The skiing area normally opens end November and stays open until primo April. In the summer period it is fantastic for mountains trips in car, by bike or hiking. To go to Sierra Nevada then you go towards Granada and then you follow the signs for Sierra Nevada. You can also programme “Prado llano” en your gps – this is the main village in the ski resort. Las Alpujarras that we describe below – here you have to take a turn LONG TIME before Granada – you can follow the signs towards “Lanjaron” – known for the quality drinking still water.
LAS ALPUJARRAS. Also a very beautiful area of Spain that is not really well-known but this makes it even more pretty. Here you have many charming beautiful white villages like Pampaneira and Capileira. If we were forched to choose in between Frigiliana and Alpujarras then we would definitely choose Alpujarras. Try the local small chocolate factory “Abuela Ili” in Pampaneira and of course the delicious hams “Jamon Serrano”. A Danish cook “Anne Mad” made one of her Spanish television castings from the highest point of Alpujarras – in the village Trevelez. Alpujarras you find by taking the highway to Granada and then turn in direction of Lanjaron. After the highway it is mountain roads – asphalted but with curves, so we suggest to leave early morning at 6 or 7 and have sufficient time for driving and stopping.
EL CAMINITO DEL REY – a UNFORGETABLE experience. Important that you prepare yourself on this extremely beautiful experience of nature:
It is really high up, so if you are afraid of hights then do NOT join. No reason to push yourself
Some of our guest have had difficulty in finding the entrance to this place, so please prepare yourself by books or internet before heading off. Or send us an email and then we will help you.

2.2. Longer Trips (minimum 1 night stay) On this longer trips of course you will need a car and a place to stay overnight. Alternatively you could rent an autocamper. Contact Brian Nesgaard Nielsen ([email protected]) if you are interested. If you want to go on anyone of thesse longer trips (below) then we suggest you to prepare yourself f.x. through internet channels, or write us a short email before going, and then we will try to help you.
RONDA. Fantastic village – incredible but true. Ronda is build on the top of a rock in beautiful nature – you will not believe it before you see it. And the village has a great charm, narrow streets and a bull fighting arena.
SEVILLA. The Heart of South Spain and Andalucia. The dance “Sevillana” originates from Sevilla – a beautiful and traditional dance – less serious than Flamenco. If you study the tourist sights of Sevilla – you will find many – we definitely recommend a visit to the Catolic Cathedral. The centre of the city is packed with cosy bars and restaurants. You will not starve.
CORDOBA. Even though that Sevilla is the heart of Andalucia, then we anyway would recommend to go first to Cordoba, if we were forced to choose.. “La Mezquita” – unbelievable – You really will take a trip back in Spanish history. Cordoba is a hard to describe beauty – it must be experienced
GIBRALTAR. The English part of South Spain. It is a long drive if you make it as 1 day trip then you must leave Almuñecar VERY early. Better to take an overnight stay. It is known by almost all tourists, but we still recommend you to see no. 1-3 before you go to Gibraltar. When you go to Gibraltar then be sure to go on one of the organised trips to the top of the rock and say hello to the monkeys. Gibraltar is worth a visit but probably it has been promoted a bit too much.
